Letting the Story Lead the Way

Photojournalist and community organizer Daniella Zalcman discusses her long-term documentary projects and the construction of her visual approach, particularly how each story's history guides her aesthetic choices.

From documenting the evolution of anti-gay laws in Uganda to spending a decade interviewing survivors of Canada and America's genocidal boarding school systems for Indigenous youth, as well as capturing the journey of a Syrian family fleeing civil war, Daniella emphasizes the central role of community engagement and participation in her process. She guides attendees through the conceptualization, development, and the lessons learned along the way.
